Greg Ferry’s latest exhibition starring Harvey the enormous Huntaway dog, dive into the mechanisms of the rise and fall of empires and the struggle for social status and supremacy.
Informed by his recent travels through France in 2023 and the artists residency at Chateau Orqueveau, this collection of works brings together aspects of observed realism through field studies, exploration of romanticism, to expression of humorous imagination. The result is a group of works akin to the mystic fog of history. In a historically artistic sense they are almost believable.
Each work comes together to address the psychological motivation behind the mechanisms of the rise and fall of empires. Fuelled by ambition, control, overreach and a veiled self interest.
The physically visible elements within social structures are all there to remind subjects and potential opponents of who is in charge, a reminder to “stay in your lane”. Yet it is innate in both dog and human nature the insatiable urge to overtake whoever is in front.
